New Route 66 resource

Many of our guests come to us while traveling Historic Route 66. We recently had a visit from Sam Allen of Houston, Texas, a corporate finance attorney who spends his free time cruising all over the country on a Harley.

Allen dropped by the Campbell while doing field research for his latest project:, a website designed specifically for bikers planning motorcycle trips on the Mother Road.

While motorcycle-specific Route 66 websites have been set up in the past, those that exist today are primarily sales-driven sites offering package tours or bike rentals; travelogues of individuals’ trips; or motorcycle museum sites. Until his death in 2002, the late Kirk Woodward operated an excellent online Route 66 guide for motorcyclists that served as a companion to his 1995 Motorcycle Guide to Historic Route 66, The Mother Road and a resource for participants in the tours he organized, but his site has since vanished.

Allen’s new project is a welcome replacement for Woodward’s site, filling the gap admirably with its comprehensive collection of resources, including turn-by-turn directions, travel tips, and detailed information about helmet laws, motorcycle rallies, Route 66 associations,  and more. While the site is geared specifically toward motorcyclists, travelers of all stripes will benefit from Allen’s research.

Before you make that California trip, be sure to check out — and don’t forget to make a reservation at The Campbell Hotel, which Allen describes as “one of the nicest hotels along all of Route 66.” (What can we say? The man has good taste!)
