Hurricane in Tulsa?

Mention a storm in Oklahoma, and most people probably conjure up scenes from the movie Twister. After all, we’re way too far inland for a hurricane, right?

Depends on the kind. Just down the street from the Campbell, a very special hurricane blows as steadily as the Oklahoma winds.

The University of Tulsa, a private university offering undergraduate, professional and postgraduate degrees, is located just a few blocks east of the Campbell on Route 66. Its mascot, the Golden Hurricane, inspired the decor for Room 208.

TU, which is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church USA, began in 1882 as the Presbyterian School for Indian Girls in Muskogee. In 1894, it became Henry Kendall College, and in 1907, in the midst of the oil boom, it moved to Tulsa. A few years later, a proposed college named for oilman Robert McFarlin was proposed, but to avoid competition that would be detrimental to both institutions, the Henry Kendall College trustees suggested merging the two into a single entity, which would be known as the University of Tulsa. TU’s charter was approved on Nov. 9, 1920, and in 1928, its School of Petroleum Engineering opened.

Over the years, TU evolved to include a graduate school, a law school and other programs. Today, TU consistently ranks as one of U.S. News & World Report’s Top 100 national universities, and it is known for its high number of National Merit Scholars; its law school, which specializes in Native American legal issues; and its world-class petroleum engineering program.

At the Campbell, we are proud to honor our distinguished neighbors with two special TU-themed rooms: Room 208, the Golden Hurricane Room, and Room 222, the TU Alumni Room.

Bring the family and relax in our Golden Hurricane Room.

The Golden Hurricane Room offers a whirlpool jetted tub, spacious writing desk, and decorative fireplace. Bringing the family to town for a ballgame? The Golden Hurricane Room can connect to the adjacent Pearl Room to accommodate Mom, Dad and the kids.

The TU Alumni Room is perfect for any Golden Hurricane fan.

Our TU Alumni Room will delight any University of Tulsa fan with its blue, gold and crimson decor, beautiful pictures of the campus, and window treatments that evoke the university flag.
