The Nathan Hale High School Class of 1972 recently held its 40-year reunion at the Campbell Hotel and Event Center.
Class treasurer Connie Hamernik Doverspike, who helped organize the reunion, said about 180 people were on hand for the festivities, which included a dinner, music, skits, a silent auction, and near-constant visits among old friends.
“Reunions are a hoot,” she said.
Because many of the participants stayed at the Campbell, meetings in common areas were — well, common.
“I was up ’til 2 or 3 every night at the commons area upstairs,” Doverspike said. “…I’d say one of the most successful things was the location.”
Although the popularity of cell phones in lieu of landlines makes it difficult to track down classmates, Doverspike said she and the other organizers were able to locate 92 percent of the 815 graduates this year. She said annual mailings help keep the database up to date, which simplifies the process of contacting everybody for reunions, which are held every five years.
A few fun facts:
• Nathan Hale High School opened in 1959.
• Mark Radcliffe, a Hollywood producer who has worked on such films as Mrs. Doubtfire and the Harry Potter movies, is a member of the Hale Class of ’72, as are Diana and Walker Hanson, whose sons Isaac, Taylor and Zac put Tulsa on the map as the pop trio Hanson.
• According to the Web site thepeoplehistory.com, gas cost 55 cents a gallon.
• Also in 1972, a gunman opened fire at the Munich Olympics, killing 11 Israeli athletes; five White House operatives were caught burglarizing the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C.; and Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” topped the Billboard charts.
